NFL Player Suspended For Betting On GamesArizona Cardinals Cornerback Will Be Out Of Football Until At Least The 2021 Season |

For the first time in nearly 40 years, the NFL has suspended one of its players for betting on its games.
Last Friday, the league announced that it suspended Arizona Cardinals cornerback Josh Shaw indefinitely after it was uncovered that the 27-year-old University of Southern California alum had bet on multiple games this season.
According to a statement from the NFL, Shaw did not benefit from any inside information and did not compromise the outcome of any game. No other players or coaches knew of his gambling. His suspension will last at least through the end of the 2020 season. He can file for reinstatement on February 15, 2021.
It was not disclosed if Shaw bet on the Cardinals, how much he wagered and where he bet. A spokesperson for the league said those details are irrelevant to the broader issues of the incident.
“The continued success of the NFL depends directly on each of us doing everything necessary to safeguard the integrity of the game and the reputations of all who participate in the league,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement. “At the core of this responsibility is the longstanding principle that betting on NFL games, or on any element of a game, puts at risk the integrity of the game, damages public confidence in the NFL, and is forbidden under all circumstances.”
Shaw has been on the injured reserve list for the entire season after injuring his shoulder in the team’s preseason opener. He signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals in March for $895,000.
While the league won’t disclose where he made the bet, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that Shaw made the bet at a Las Vegas casino this fall while on a trip with friends from high school.
“He’s on IR & hasn’t been around the team since preseason,” tweeted Rapoport. “Shaw placed sports bets for the 1st time based on misinterpreted understanding of the Supreme Court ruling.”
In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, which allowed states to legalize sports betting in their respective borders if they choose to. Based on Rapoport’s tweet, it seems as if Shaw thought that the changing legal landscape superseded the NFL’s own rules on the issue.
In 1983, Baltimore Colts quarterback Art Schlichter was suspended by the league for gambling on football. It was the last time a player was suspended for gambling by the league.
