Ohio casinos experienced its seventh straight year of record-setting revenue in 2019, according to data released by the state’s lottery and casino control commissions.
Over the course of the year, the state’s 11 casinos and racinos won $1.94 billion from gamblers. It’s the most revenue generated by casino operators since the state legalized casino gambling in 2012.
The figure does not include any money earned from food and beverage sales, as well as any money won wagers on horse races.
After the state saw casinos win $430 million in the second half of 2012, operators have increased year-over-year revenue every year, starting with the $1.07 billion won in 2013. It wasn’t until 2013 that the state’s fourth and final casino opened, and later 2014 when the state’s seventh and final racino opened its doors.
In 2015, the first full year with the current landscape, operators won $1.64 billion from gamblers. There has been a steady increase to the current figure and is on pace to break the $2 billion mark in 2020. The 2019 numbers were up 4.2 percent from 2018’s record-setting $1.86 billion.
No casino performed better than the Hollywood Casino Columbus, which finished the year with $229.2 million. JACK Cleveland Casino was the second-largest grossing casino with $212.1 million, while JACK Cincinnati Casino brought in $207.7 million and Hollywood Casino Toledo generated $202 million in revenue.
The highest-grossing property in the state, however, was a racino. MGM Northfield Park, which rebranded from the Hard Rock Rocksino last April, won $253.6 million. It was actually a slight decline from 2018’s $255.9 million.
For all seven racinos, the properties experienced a combined 6.2 percent increase year-over-year, while casino revenue jumped 1.6 percent. Racinos only offer slot machines to go along with its pari-mutuel wagering.
