On her Wikipedia page, Ellen DeGeneres is described as a comedian, talk show host, actress and writer. After Sunday, she might be able to add poker player that list.
According to People, DeGeneres’ wife, actress Portia de Rossi, gifted her a private poker lesson with World Poker Tour commentator Vince Van Patten for DeGeneres’ 62nd birthday.
As seen in de Rossi’s Instagram video of the coaching session, Van Patten gave her some of the finer points of live tells at the table. Van Patten conveyed the theory that if a player acts strong, they are generally weak and if a player acts weak, they are generally strong.
“Some players will go ‘Uhh, I might…’ and then they try to table talk me back into the hand, if they’re strong,” said Van Patten.
The WPT personality, former professional tennis player and star of prop-bet comedy film 7 Days to Vegas left the DeGeneres household impressed by her skills.

While DeGeneres doesn’t have any recorded tournaments cashes, she may have some experience in the world of high-stakes gambling. In 2018, gossip site Radar Online alleged that DeGeneres hosts high-stakes poker games at her home with other A-list celebrities where players would regularly incur swings of a few hundred thousand dollars.
Those reports, however, have never been substantiated. It’s important to note that Radar Online is owned by the same company that owns the National Enquirer, a longstanding tabloid newspaper that has made its fair share of false claims about celebrities.
