Many Las Vegas sportsbooks are open after Nevada casinos started to reopen last Thursday and one sports bettor didn’t take any time easing back into gambling.
Most major American sports are still on hold from the COVID-19 pandemic, but the UFC has already begun holding fights without fans. On Saturday, an unnamed sports bettor placed a seven-figure bet on the main event of UFC 250.
According to a press release from William Hill, a Nevada gambler bet $1 million on Amanda Nunes to successfully defend her featherweight title against Felicia Spencer at a Las Vegas sportsbook. He placed the bet at -600 odds, so he was laying the book 6:1 and stood to win $166,666.66.
After he placed the bet, the money line moved to -650, while pricing Spencer at +450. Nunes won the fight in a unanimous decision from the judges and the book took a six-figure loss on the bet.
This was the first major sporting event Nevada casinos were able to accept bets on for quite some time. While online sportsbooks were able to offer betting on some more obscure sports or overseas leagues, most of Nevada’s sports betting is limited to brick-and-mortar locations.
It is one of the major reasons that Silver State gaming revenue was just $3.6 million in April, while its New Jersey counterparts still racked up $82.6 million.
