This year’s World Series of Poker was pushed back to the fall, but tournaments in Las Vegas are still plentiful throughout the summer with other properties holding tournament series with massive prize pools.
Longtime poker pro Jonathan Tamayo took down one of the first major tournaments of the season, earning $237,935 at the Wynn Summer Classic. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the Houston native bested a massive field of 1,720 entries in the $1,100 no-limit hold’em event to earn the six-figure sum and the trophy.
Tamayo bested a final table that featured World Poker Tour champion Frank Stepuchin and successful east coast grinder Michael Azzaro, who finished eighth and sixth, respectively. Tamayo defeated Jorge Arrioca heads-up to secure the title.
The event featured a $1 million guaranteed prize pool, which it easily crushed. With 1,720 entries over three starting flights, the tournament generated a $1.67 million prize pool. Other notables to cash the event, but fell short of the final table included Thomas Zanot (24th- $9,288), Blake Whittington (40th-$7,223), WPT champion and WSOP bracelet winner Jared Jaffee (45th-$6,437), Eric Baldwin (64th-$5,211), and WPT champion Jasthi Kumar (65th-$5,211).
The three flights took place on Friday, May 28, Saturday, May 29, and Sunday, May 30. The survivors of those three days came back on Monday, May 31 to play down to a winner. By the time Tamayo acquired all of the chips in play, it was early Tuesday morning.
With the victory, Tamayo jumps his career earnings to just north of $1.9 million. It’s one of the largest cashes of his career, behind only his 21st place finish in the 2009 WSOP main event, which was good for $352,832. It’s his fifth career tournament win, with the others resulting in his four career WSOP Circuit rings.
It’s the second cash of 2021 for the 35-year-old, following a min-cash in the $1,300 no-limit hold’em at the 2021 Lonestar Spring Series at Champions Social in Houston. The victory at the Wynn catapults him into 44th place in the Card Player Player of the Year race, sponsored by Global Poker, with 1,080 points.
