Hollywood’s next attempt to create a successful poker movie comes this fall as “The Card Counter” is released in theatres on Sept. 10.

The film, which was written and produced by Paul Schrader, is about a former military interrogator turned professional gambler that grapples with decisions he made in his past. His life in casinos serves as the backdrop for the film’s larger narrative.

While the movie is titled after a common blackjack practice, the film’s main character William Tell, played by Oscar Isaac, is portrayed as an all-around successful gambler.

He learned how to count cards during a 10-year stint in prison and eventually became a successful poker player. There were scenes in the trailer that featured Tell playing both blackjack and poker. There were a few scenes that even featured the World Series of Poker logo on a poker table.

Willem Dafoe and Tiffany Haddish were also cast to major roles in the film.

Poker commentator and comedian Joe Stapleton said on Twitter that he was hired as a poker consultant for the film to ensure the poker scenes were as authentic as possible. It was selected to be a part of the 2021 Venice Film Festival.
