Caesars Entertainment inked a sports betting deal with one of the largest college football bowl games in the nation Monday.
According to a report from the Detroit Free Press, the gaming giant entered into a multi-year agreement with the Fiesta Bowl Organization. It will allow Caesars to host fan lounges at the Fiesta Bowl and the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, both of which are played in Arizona. Fans at the game will be able to place sports bets through the company’s mobile sportsbook app.
The move comes just a few weeks before sports betting is set to launch in Arizona, with the legal market set to roll out on Sept. 9. It’s the first time a major college football bowl game partnered with a gambling company.
“Five years ago this was probably taboo or you didn’t even speak of it,” said Fiesta Bowl Chief Marketing Office Jose Moreno told the Free Press. “But this is the evolution of sports as a whole and we’re excited for it.”
Last April, the legislature passed and Gov. Doug Ducey signed HB 2772 into law. It allowed Ducey to renegotiate the state’s gaming compact with the tribe, ultimately leading to legal sports betting and the first time in state history that gambling could take place outside of tribal entities. In exchange, tribal casinos will be allowed to offer Class III gaming like craps and roulette.
Tribes will also be able to accept sports wagers, but the major development from the new agreement was that fans would be able to place bets at live sporting events. The government will award 10 sports betting licenses to the state’s major athletic operators.
