Phil Hellmuth is already the all-time leader in World Series of Poker gold bracelets with 15. The 57-year-old Poker Hall of Fame member is now in prime position to add to his lead in the bracelet race as one of the final nine players remaining in the 2021 WSOP $25,000 buy-in HORSE event. If the 1989 WSOP main event champion were able to emerge victorious on Saturday, Oct. 2, he would secure his record-extending sixteenth bracelet and the first-place prize of $552,182.

“I have wanted to win a HORSE tourney ever since I watched the great [Doyle Brunson] win a WSOP HORSE in 2003. I didn’t have the skill set to win HORSE then, but I have spent thousands of hours working on my HORSE game over these last 25 years (playing and discussing each and every mix game with other top pros like [Mike Matusow]),” said Hellmuth in a social media post after surviving to the final day of this prestigious event. “I had a 3rd and a 2nd in mixed games at the WSOP in 2019. Big day for me tomorrow!”

Hellmuth already has a five-win lead on the nearest competition in the bracelet race, with the previously mentioned Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, and Johnny Chan tied for second place with 10 each. Erik Seidel entered into a tie with Johnny Moss for third place earlier this year when he won his ninth bracelet during the WSOP Online.

This tournament drew a total of 78 entries, creating a prize pool of $1,842,750. Only the top 12 finishers made the money, with bracelet winner Yuval Bronshtein eliminated on the bubble. Cary Katz finished 12th for $42,162, while Roland Israelashvili and six-time bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu each earned $46,002 as the 11th and 10th-place finishers after they were both eliminated in one hand by Benny Glaser.

Glaser, a three-time bracelet winner from the United Kingdom, is the chip leader heading into the final day. Three-time bracelet winner Ben Yu and bracelet winner David Benyamine will also be looking to add more WSOP hardware to their collections, while the remaining players will all be looking for their first win at the series. Action is set to resume at 2:00 p.m. local time.
