Maryland casino gambling regulators announced Friday that the state’s six casinos combined to generate $172.9 million in gambling winnings during December 2021, making it the second-best month in the history of Maryland’s casino market.

The $172.9 million performance in December edged out the $172.4 million in gaming win during May 2021. The record, a July 2021 figure of $180.1 million, still stands.

As for a year-over-year comparison, the casinos won 45% more last month than they did in December 2020, a month that was more greatly impacted by restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic. The casinos had reduced capacity in 2020.

Casino gaming contributions to the state in December 2021 totaled $71.1 million.

“The combination of the holiday season and the launch of sports wagering at five of the casinos during December led to great results,” said Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin. “We congratulate our casino partners for their ongoing success.”

Maryland’s six casinos are MGM National Harbor, Live! Casino & Hotel, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, Ocean Downs Casino, Hollywood Casino Perryville, and Rocky Gap Casino Resort.

MGM National Harbor, located near the nation’s capital, led the way in December 2021 gaming win with $74.5 million, followed by Live! Casino with $62.4 million. Horseshoe Casino was a distant third with $17 million, with the rest well under $10 million.

Retail sports betting is already underway in the state, but no official figures are in yet from December. Mobile sportsbooks are expected to launch in mid-2022.
