The Venetian Resort Las Vegas played host to the first series of high roller tournaments in 2022, with four high-stakes events running from Jan. 5-8. Rising star Punnat Punsri took down both of the $10,000 buy-in events, winning on back-to-back days to come away with $251,237 in total prize money. After that strong showing by a relatively unknown up-and-comer, the final two high roller events saw a pair of well-established high-stakes regulars come away with the titles.

Alex FoxenAlex Foxen emerged victorious in the $15,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em event, defeating a field of 26 total entries to earn $153,615 and 216 Card Player Player of the Year points. Foxen was fresh off of a fourth-place finish in the 2021 POY final standings and got right back to work in the early days of the new year.

This was Foxen’s second POY-qualified score of 2022 already, having placed fourth in the first event won by Punsri. With 336 points and $191,015 in POY earnings, he now sits inside the top five in this year’s standings. He also earned 154 PokerGO Tour points for the win to climb into second on that leaderboard.

Foxen secured the title after striking a heads-up deal with World Series of Poker bracelet winner Michael Wang, who earned $134,985 and 180 POY points as the runner-up. Nine-time bracelet winner Erik Seidel recorded his second in-the-money finish of the year, placing fourth for $39,000 and 108 points. He climbed to seventh in the rankings as a result.

Ali ImsirovicThe fourth and final high roller on the schedule featured the largest buy-in yet. A total of 20 entries were made in the $25,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em event, creating prize pool of $500,000. In the end, the title and the top payout of $240,000 went to none other than 2021 Card Player Player of the Year award winner Ali Imsirovic.

Fresh off of a 14 title, 30 final table performance last year, Imsirovic took just over a week to find his way back to the winner’s circle in 2022. In addition to the six-figure top prize, he also secured 252 POY points to catapult himself inside the top ten in the standings. He also earned 162 PGT points, enough to move into third in that points race for the time being.

Imsirovic overcame a slight chip deficit at the start of heads-up play to get past Masashi Oya for the win. Oya has had an incredible couple weeks in Las Vegas. First, he defeated a field of 851 entries to win the Mid-States Poker Tour Venetian $1,100 buy-in event in the final days of 2021 for $161,780. Then he made two deep runs in the high roller events, finishing third in the second $10,000 buy-in event for $59,200 and 160 points before securing another $150,000 and 210 points as the runner-up in this event. With 370 points and $209,200 in 2022 POY earnings, Oya now sits in third place in the POY race.

Steven Grady finished third for the second time in as many days. With $142,400 and 312 points earned across the two scores, he is now within striking distance of the top five.
