Minnesota House Passes Sports Betting ProposalLegislation Expected To Fall Short In Senate |

The Minnesota House on Thursday advanced a bill to legalize in-person and online sports betting, but its fate in the Senate is bleak.
Under the House proposal, indigenous groups with gambling would have the exclusivity for sports betting. That’s reportedly a no-go for members of the Minnesota Senate.
The House bill cleared that chamber by a 70-57 vote, so there was plenty of opposition. Proponents of sports betting in the Senate reportedly want the state’s racetracks to also have the right to offer sports gambling.
Canterbury Park and Running Aces are also looking to have sports betting.
“The pressure has really been building for us to do something here in Minnesota,” said Rep. Zack Stephenson, DFL-Coon Rapids, according to CBS Minnesota. “No one from Minnesota should have to go to Iowa to have fun. That’s kind of the motto here. We should have the ability to do this safely, legally and with guard rails here in Minnesota.”
Minnesotans will likely have to wait until at least next year for a bill to pass, with the prospects reportedly non-existent in the Senate. Following legalization, the launch of online sportsbooks in the state could take an additional year.
A total of 11 Native American Tribes in the state could offer sports betting under the House bill. The activity would be subject to a 10% rate.
There are 40 tribal casinos located in Minnesota.
