Months Of Football Betting Action To Be Missed

Ohio sports bettors were dealt some unfortunate news this week.

Online sportsbooks won’t launch around the time of the upcoming football season, and instead will kick off around Christmas. Ohio legalized sports betting in 2021, with a required start-by date of Jan. 1, 2023.

There was some hope among the industry and the sports betting community that Ohio regulators would fast-track the launch, but that isn’t happening. Ohio is one of 35 states with legal sports betting.

According to a report from Wcpo.com, Ohio Casino Control Commission Executive Director Matt Schuler said Wednesday that much work still needs to be done.

“For everyone interested, they really should expect it to be very close to – if not on – January 1st,” spokeswoman Jessica Franks said, according to the report. “We anticipate roughly 3,000 (license applications) might come in. We’re going to need to do all of those investigations to issue those licenses and then make sure they’re in compliance with all of the rules and regulations. We’re going to need all of that time right up until January.”

Ohio will have up to 25 online sportsbooks and up to 40 retail sportsbooks.
