The 2022 World Series of Poker’s first Omaha event of the summer proved to be a record-breaking affair as 1,067 hopefuls packed the Paris ballroom on the Las Vegas Strip for the $1,500 buy-in Omaha eight-or-better event. The turnout surpassed the previous record of 1,036 entrants for the event back in 2014.

The final 164 players made the money, splitting up the $1,451,154 prize pool. In the end, it was longtime poker grinder Amnon Filippi who walked away with the biggest slice of it, banking $252,718 and his first career bracelet.

Filippi’s first cash at the series came back in 2005. The 52-year-old’s previous best finish was a fourth-place showing at the 2007 $50,000 buy-in Poker Players Championship worth $586,080.

“I’m just glad to get it out of the way,” the New York resident told WSOP reporters. “I come from a crew of guys [such as] JC Tran, Quinn Do, and Tommy Hang. They all have bracelets. Me and Nam Le were the last two Mohicans who [didn’t] have bracelets, so now I’m on the list of having one. I’ve got to go for another.”

The four-time World Poker Tour final tablist now has nearly $3.7 million in career tournament earnings.

Because of the huge field, the tournament took an extra day to finish. Originally scheduled for three days, both Filippi and his heads-up opponent Matt Vengrin were forced to halt play late on day 3 and return for a fourth.

Unfortunately for Vengrin, also a New York native, finishing runner-up was an all-too-familiar feeling. The former online standout has previously finished second in the 2015 $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. event, as well as the 2020 $400 PLO online event. He also has a third-place, fourth-place, and sixth-place showing.

The final table also featured Matt Glantz, who was searching for his first bracelet after more than a dozen WSOP final tables, as well as two-time bracelet winner and former MMA fighter Rami Boukai, and two-time bracelet winner and former hairstylist Mel Judah.

Other notables who made a deep run in the event included Chris Bell (18th), Andrew Brown (19th), Shaun Deeb (28th), John Esposito (33rd), Ryan Hughes (35th), and Felipe Ramos (36th).

All-time WSOP cash leader Phil Hellmuth also made the money, finishing in 136th place. He now has 158 WSOP cashes, which leads Daniel Negreanu by 16.
