An online sportsbook in Pennsylvania has been hit with a small fine for accepting illegal bets.
A sports betting product from MGM Resorts took bets on a banned event. A $7,500 fine was levied by regulators in the Keystone State against BetMGM for accepting and paying out wagers on the Victor Belfort vs. Evander Holyfield boxing match on Sept. 11, 2021.
The PGCB specifically notified all operators that wagering on this event would not be permitted. In total, 76 wagers were accepted by BetMGM.
Evander Holyfield vs. Vitor Belfort was an exhibition boxing match at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood in Miami, Florida. Belfort won the fight by TKO at 1:49 of the first round. Former President Donald Trump was one of the people behind the event, and he offered commentary on the fights.
A boxing match between Anderson Silva and Tito Ortiz, both former UFC fighters, was also on the card.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board announced that it approved a consent agreement presented by the Board’s Office of Enforcement Counsel during its public meeting this month that jointly fined Mountainview Thoroughbred Racing Association, LLC and BetMGM, LLC for accepting sports wagers on an unapproved sporting event.
The approved consent agreement resulted from negotiations between OEC and Mountainview Thoroughbred Racing Association, operator of Hollywood Casino Morgantown in Berks County and its sports wagering partner BetMGM.
Boxing is an approved sport for betting in the state, but exhibition bouts need specific approval. Holyfield is 60 years old, while Belfort is 45.
