Chase Davis Credit: WSOP / ChoctawThree starting flights at the World Series of Poker Circuit’s first stop of 2023 built a field of 1,491 entries at Choctaw Casino Resort in Durant, Oklahoma.

The $1,700 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament had a prize pool worth $2,258,865, and the top 130 players all cashed for at least $3,905 in prize money during the five-day event.

Every player that cashed returned for day 2, and that’s when the remaining field played all the way down to the final table of nine. Those final nine players returned on Sunday, Jan. 16 to crown the first WSOP Circuit champion of the year.

That champion was Chase Davis, and the $357,269 in prize money he was awarded is the biggest score of his career. The player from Wichita, Kansas now has tournament earnings just shy of half a million dollars.

The final table took just over eight hours to decide a winner. Davis came in as the second shortest stack at the start of play, and he was even at risk of elimination during eight-handed play when a ten on the river rescued his tournament run and set the stage for a solid comeback run.

“I came into the day planning to avoid the two massive stacks and attack some of the newer players with the middling stacks close to mine, and that out worked pretty well. I was able to battle these guys and stay out of the way. Then the big stacks had their blunders against other players and I sort of laid low until the last half of the table where I gained some steam,” said Davis to the WSOP Circuit reporters after the victory.

Davis defeated Jonathan Dull in the heads-up final with A-K dominating A-4 on the final hand. The runner-up from Fresno, California took home $220,809 for the largest cash of his poker career, and his tournament earnings are now right on the cusp of a million dollars.

A few other notables that cashed in the event included Justin Lapka (7th), Tim Kelliher (12th), Cedrric Trevino (13th), Viet Vo (21st), Steve Buckner (38th), Jared Hemingway (39th), Ian Steinman (71st), Ben Keeline (86th), and Brian Battistone (127th).
