The champion of the latest Mid-States Poker Tour main event that recently concluded at the Hollywood Casino near St. Louis was Umut Ozturk. The Minnesota native also claimed the Missouri State Champion title as this event was serving a dual purpose. He was awarded $101,366 for his largest tournament score and first tournament victory. He also took home the tournament trophy, and his career earnings now stand at $332,686.
The $1,110 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament had a prize pool worth $841,750 thanks to three starting flights that attracted a total of 865 entries. The top 90 players all cashed for at least $2,182 in prize money. There were just 114 that returned for the second and final day of the tournament, and the money bubble burst in just under an hour to start the day.
The final four players decided on a chop after just two hours of play at the final table later that night with Ozturk taking home the title, and Jared Ingles taking home his second runner-up finish in a row at a MSPT main event. The runner-up originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana added $100,337 (he also pocketed $104,762 at MSPT Black Hawk) to his career earnings that now stand at $1,836,375. Ingles also added 760 Card Player Player of the Year points, and he now sits in 14th place in the current POY standings with 1,520 points.
Ozturk was very excited after picking up his first tournament victory, and he had this to say to the MSPT reporters after the final table, “This win wasn’t just about me, it was about all of us Minnesota guys who are out here grinding, playing these events and supporting this tour.” He also added with a chuckle, “I wasn’t supposed to be here, but I just luckboxed my way to the final table.”
A few other notables that cashed in the event included Chad Chizek (17th), John Thornton (27th), DJ Alexander (42nd), Albert Morrow (63rd), Brian Battistone (76th), Grant Wolfe (78th), and Sean Larson (87th).
