Ronnie Rivers is a running back for the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL, and a former Fresno State Bulldogs star who just hit a big jackpot on the Las Vegas Strip. Rivers was playing at Caesars Palace on Feb. 4 to celebrate his mother’s birthday when he hit a mega jackpot playing three card poker. That jackpot was good for a score worth $514,837. Rivers said he planned to buy a house with the winnings.
Rivers is on the current roster for the Rams, and the undrafted rookie’s current NFL salary was good for $705,000 in 2022. He is set to make an additional $870,000 in 2023. Rivers appeared sparingly in eight games for the Rams, rushing for 21 yards in nine attempts, and catching five receptions for 29 receiving yards.
Rivers had an impressive collegiate career playing for Fresno State in the Mountain West Conference from 2017-21 before he made the jump to the NFL. He rushed for 3,417 yards with 49 touchdowns. He also added 1,421 reception yards, and an additional 11 receiving touchdowns during his time as a Bulldog. His father Ron Rivers is one of two Fresno State running backs to rush for more yards than Ronnie during their college careers as a Bulldog.
Gambling among professional athletes can be thought of as a taboo, but it is perfectly legal for NFL players, just as long as they’re not betting on NFL games. Wide Receiver Calvin Ridley from the Atlanta Falcons learned this the hard way back in 2022.
