On June 11, Italy’s Simone Andrian was crowned the champion at the World Poker Tour Prime San Remo main event. Andrian was awarded the top prize worth $157,973 along with his first WPT Prime title after coming away with the win at the Casino San Remo on the shores of the Italian Riviera. He also gets a $10,400 seat in the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas in December.
This is the second career title for Andrian, who won a gold bracelet at the World Series of Poker Europe back in 2021 when he topped the field in a no-limit hold’em six-max event. Andrian also saw his career earnings climb above the half-million threshold with the victory.
The €1,100 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament drew a field of 838 entries during four starting flights. The total prize pool was set at $846,404, and the top 106 players all took home at least $1,880. Day 2 saw all those players that made the money return, and they played down to the final table of nine. Notables that fell during Day 2 included WPT Champions Club member Alessio Isaia (71st), and WPTDeepStacks Champion Sandro Pitzanti (20th).
Andrian was the chip leader when the final table began with almost double the chips of his closest competitor. He stayed well out in front of the field even before Andrian took out Ivan Kuziv in seventh place to keep total control of the lead. Well-known American professional poker player Kevin O’Donnell was knocked out in fifth place, and the tournament grinder’s career earnings are now well over $2 million.
Andrian scored his second knockout punch at the final table when he eliminated Giussepe Zarbo in third place to take a more than 2:1 chip advantage into the heads-up final against Aristidis Theodoridis. The Greek player had done most of the heavy lifting with eliminations at the final table by taking out the majority of the players on the final day of play to find his way to the last two standing.
Andrian grew his chip advantage to 8:1 before Theodoridis scored a timely double up that stretched the action all the way to the 152nd hand before the title was decided. Theodoridis reraised all in with A8 in the hole, but he was dominated by the AK held by Andrian. The final board was dealt K7768 to improve Andrian’s hand to a flush. Theodoridis took home $96,705 in prize money as the runner-up for what was easily the largest score of his career.
Here is a look at the payouts awarded at the final table:
