Shaun Deeb has been an elite closer so far 2023. He’s made nine final tables this year, and has walked away with the title more than half of the time. The 37-year-old poker pro secured his fifth victory this week at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open. Deeb outlasted a field of 22 entries in the $25,500 buy-in pot-limit Omaha high roller, earning $239,100 for the win.
With this latest title, Deeb climbed to 15th place in the 2023 Card Player Player of the Year standings presented by Global Poker. He has accumulated 4,286 points and more than $1.3 million in POY earnings thus far.
Deeb was far from the only top POY contender at the final table of this high-stakes PLO event. Fifth-ranked Ren Lin placed fourth for $65,200 and 126 points for his 18th final-table showing of the year. He has 6,241 total points and nearly $3.3 million in to-date POY earnings. Alex Foxen earned $97,800 and 168 points as the third-place finisher. He now occupies the eighth-place spot on the leaderboard, with 5,183 points and nearly $2.3 million in POY earnings.
The first of Deeb’s five titles this year came when he took down the $10,300 H.O.R.S.E. event at the PGT Mixed Games festival back in early February. In late March, he bested a field of 1,070 entries in the World Series of Poker Circuit Turning Stone $1,700 no-limit hold’em main event for $275,916. Deeb then took down a $5,000 side event at the Lodge Championship Series in Texas for another six-figure payday.
During the WSOP, Deeb cashed 24 times, including winning his sixth career gold bracelet as the champion of the $1,500 buy-in eight-game mix event.
In this PLO event, Deeb had to outlast not only Lin and Foxen down the stretch, but also had to tangle World Poker Tour champion Roger Teska to secure the title. In the final hand, all of the chips went in after a flop of 974. Teska had JJ53 for a flush draw, straight draw, and overpair to the board. Deeb held J976 for top two pair. The 5 on the turn kept Deeb ahead, and the 9 river gave him nines full of sevens to lock up the pot and the title. Teska earned $141,300 as the runner-up, growing his lifetime earnings to nearly $4.3 million in the process.
Here is a look at the payouts and POY points awarded at the final table:
Place | Player | Earnings | POY Points |
1 | Shaun Deeb | $239,100 | 252 |
