Oscar Gironella topped the field at the World Poker Tour Prime Madrid main event on Oct. 2 in Spain. The Portugal resident took home his first tournament victory and WPT Prime trophy along with the top prize money worth $73,840. It was the largest score of his tournament career, and second five-figure cash. Gironella also booked a $10,400 seat in the WPT World Championship event hosted at Wynn Las Vegas that is just over two months away.

The €1,100 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament saw a field of 396 entries join the fray during three starting flights. That put the total prize pool at $401,434. The top 51 players in the field scored at least a min-cash of $2,032.61, and that’s exactly how many players returned on Day 2 to march down to the final table of nine.

Gironella was second in chips when the final day of play began between the final nine, and he suffered an early setback when the short-stacked Jourdan Denis doubled through him on the sixth hand of play. Gironella laid low after that for a while as the early eliminations fell before he managed a double-up of his own on the 56th hand of play. He doubled again on Hand 78 to keep pace with the field.

Gironella only scored one elimination at the final table, but he made it count by saving it for the final hand of the tournament. He faced a 2:1 chip disadvantage against Juan Gonzalo Ares at the start of heads-up play, but he doubled up yet again to take the chip lead a few hands into the final match.

The final hand saw Ares move all in preflop with KSpade Suit10Diamond Suit, and Gironella had him covered holding KClub Suit5Spade Suit. Help came on the board when it was dealt KDiamond Suit6Spade Suit4Diamond Suit5Club Suit4Spade Suit to give Gironella two pair and the victory. Ares was eliminated in second place, good for $69,950. That’s an impressive first tournament cash for Ares while playing in his home country of Spain.

Here is a look at the payouts and POY points awarded at the final table:
