Fashion Show MallThe Las Vegas Strip continues to see more casinos on the horizon. The Fountainbleu property is opening in December after almost two decades of on-and-off again construction. Last year, Texas businessman and owner of the Houston Rockets and Golden Nugget casinos Tilman Fertitta also announced plans for a new casino at Las Vegas Boulevard and Harmon Avenue.

Another possibility was unveiled this week. The Fashion Show Mall may soon be backdropped by a new casino as well.

Howard Hughes Holdings (HHH) owns an 80% stake in the area above the mall and has announced plans for a casino tower coming to the site. The announcement came as HHH also revealed a new division called Seaport Entertainment to take over all of the company’s gaming and entertainment operations.

“The assets of Seaport Entertainment lie at the intersection of real-estate and entertainment,” Howard Hughes CEO David R. O’Reilly said.

A Growing Presence In las Vegas

Visitors to Las Vegas have been heading to the Fashion Show Mall since the property opened in 1981. Those looking for some shopping will find stores like Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

And while Las Vegas is no stranger to high-end shopping attached to a casino resort, this may be one of the few times a casino is added adjacent to a mall. HHH/Seaport doesn’t own the mall itself. The mall is owned by Brookfield Properties, but the planned casino would rise above the popular shopping destination.

Exact details on the casino aren’t yet known, but Seaport added a veteran in casino industry management to lead the company and the project. Anton Nikodemus is a former MGM Resorts executive and has been named as Seaport CEO.

Nikodemus previously served as president and COO of MGM’s CityCenter development, responsible for The Cosmopolitan, Vdara, and Aria. He also oversaw the development of the MGM casino resorts in Maryland and Massachusetts, and brings that experience to the possible Seaport project.

HHH also has home, office, and retail developments in Arizona, Hawaii, Maryland, New York, and Texas. In Nevada, the company also owns the Aviators minor league baseball team and a percentage of the Jean-Georges Restaurants, with locations at Bellagio and Aria. The company was also responsible for developing the planned community of Summerlin, located just outside of Las Vegas.
