The WPT World Championship Festival at Wynn Las Vegas is in full swing, with several massive events already wrapped up or currently running. The latest big winner crowned at the series is George Tomescu, who outlasted a field of 3,421 entries in the $1,600 buy-in mystery bounty event to earn the top prize of $500,202.
This was by far the largest live tournament payday yet for Tomescu, who hails from Romania. He now has more than $654,000 in recorded scores after this breakout victory.
In addition to the title and the main prize money, Tomescu was also awarded 1,200 Card Player Player of the Year points. This was his second POY-qualified score of the year, and it moved him within striking distance of the top 500 in the 2023 POY race standings presented by Global Poker.
The strong turnout for this event built a final prize pool of $3,215,740, blowing away the $2 million guarantee for the tournament. The top 427 finishers made the money to earn their share of that main prize money purse, with another $1,710,500 paid out among the bounties.
The largest bounty up for grabs was a $250,000 payout that was ultimately secured by David Hipperson.

Tomescu also had to contend with bracelet winner Danny Fuhs (8th) and 2021 WPT Montreal Online champion Jack Hardcastle (3rd) down the stretch before squaring off with Jiacong Zhang for the title. Zhang earned $324,347 as the runner-up when his two pair was beaten bu the turned flush of Tomescu.
