The World Series of Poker free-to-play app from mobile gaming company Playtika is calling on poker aficionados to chip in for veterans beginning on Friday, National Poker Day. For 72 hours, the company is running a “Pokerthon” to donate funds to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) charity.
The group is dedicated to empowering veterans to “lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity.” From April 19-21 players can take part in special tournaments and other gameplay and also give back to help veterans.
“This isn’t just another poker game; it’s a chance to harness the power of our players to make an impact in playing with purpose,” WSOP app general manager Guy Ceder said. “Working with such a meaningful organization like DAV on this initiative was critical for WSOP and Playtika in our continued efforts of social responsibility. We’re proud to be supporting and honoring those who have served their country by engaging our community, with in-game thrills having an out-of-game impact."
With over 16 million veterans in the U.S., DAV helps veterans of all generations address challenges they face and achieve personal victories, great to better thrive in civilian life.
The group aids more than 1 million veterans every year to access healthcare, disability benefits, employment, education, and financial benefits. DAV also advocates for legislation to help the nation’s veterans. DAV leadership was pleased to partner with WSOP on the fundraiser.
“We are thrilled that Playtika has chosen to support DAV during the World Series of Poker app’s Pokerthon,” Disabled American Veterans CEO Barry Jesinoski said. “While players have fun, they are simultaneously making a difference in a veteran’s life. Every dollar donated enables DAV to provide free, professional services to America’s veterans, their families and caregivers.”
The summer WSOP in Las Vegas has also added the $500 Salute to Warriors event in recent years with proceeds donated to the USO and other veterans’ organizations. This year’s event is set to kick off on June 27.
