Azamat Lamkov won his way into the 2024 Mediterranean Poker Party $5,000,000 guaranteed $5,300 no-limit hold’em event via an online satellite. He reportedly busted the tournament, and then managed to win another seat via a live satellite at the Merit Diamond Hotel. The Russian player turned that seat into the title and the top prize of $1,000,000.
This was by far the largest score yet for Lamkov. The 1,920 Card Player Player of the Year points he secured as the champion shot him up the standings and into 40th place in the 2024 POY race presented by Global Poker.
This huge event drew 1,260 entries, surpassing the guarantee to create a final prize pool of $6,048,000. The top 192 finishers earned a share of that money, with six figures or more going to the final eight.
Plenty of big names ran deep in this event, including World Poker Tour champion Matas Cimbolas (28th), bracelet winner Alex Keating (25th), bracelet winner and 2022 WPT Prime Championship winner Stephen Song (14th), and recent European Poker Tour Paris €10,300 buy-in high roller winner Oliver Weis (10th).
The final day began with Lamkov in the middle of the pack among the nine remaining contenders. He survived to the final four, and scored his first knockout of the day with A-10 suited holding against the Q-7 suited of Yuriy Suvorov (4th – $320,000).
The next big clash saw Lamkov open with a raise to 9,000,000 from the button. Bracelet winner Leon Sturm moved all-in for 44,500,000 from the small blind. Lamkov called with A6 and was up against JJ. An ace-high runout gave Lamkov the winning pair, eliminating Sturm in third place ($440,000). The German now has more than $7 million in career earnings to his name.
Heads-up play began with Lamkov holding 194,000,000 to Kirill Shcherbakov’s 184,000,000. Lamkov won a big pot early with a wheel to take roughly a 4:1 chip lead. In the final hand Lamkov limped in from the button holding Q2 and Shcherbakov checked with J8. The flop came down J102 and Shcherbakov checked with top pair. Lamkov bet a single big blind of 4,000,000 and Shcherbakov check-raised to 12,000,000. Lamkov moved all-in and Shcherbakov called for 47,000,000 total. The 3 turn kept Shcherbakov in the lead, but the 8 river gave Lamkov a flush for the win. Shcherbakov was awarded $680,000 as the runner-up finisher.
