Xixiang Luo will go down in poker history as the first-ever champion of a double board bomb pot event at the World Series of Poker. The Chinese player outlasted 1,312 entries in the new $1,500 buy-in tournament, which featured a mix of both pot-limit Omaha and no-limit hold’em, to earn $270,820 and his first WSOP gold bracelet.

This was Luo’s ninth recorded tournament win overall, bringing his career earnings to nearly $2.9 million. This was his second title of 2024 alone, having taking down an Asian Poker Tour Jeju tournament for $309,091 this spring. The 960 Card Player Player of the Year points Luo secured for his win at the WSOP brought his total to 2,368, which is good for 50th place in the overall POY standings presented by Global Poker.

The tournament was not exclusively contended over double board bomb pots, in which every player antes and preflop action is skipped. Those special pots occured only on the first hand of every game change between PLO and NLH.

The top 197 finishers earned a cut of the $1,751,520 prize pool in this event, with five-figure scores for the final 23. Just 16 contenders moved on to the third and final day of action, with Luo in the lead.

Plenty of accomplished players made deep runs in this tournament, including two-time bracelet winner David Prociak (19th), bracelet winner Dario Alioto (13th), bracelet winner Dejuante Alexander (11th), bracelet winner Gaby Livshitz (7th), and rising tournament crusher Quan Zhou (5th).

David Funkhouser hit the rail in fourth place ($91,891) when his K-8 suited ran into the A-J of bracelet winner William Kopp. Despite earning that knockout, Kopp was ultimately the next player to fall. He got all-in with KClub Suit4Club Suit facing the pocket eights of Daniel Hachem, son of 2005 WSOP main event champion Joe Hachem. The pocket pair held and Kopp settled for $127,925 as the third-place finisher.

Luo held the lead over Hachem when heads-up play began. The two swapped the lead a few times, but it was Luo on top when the final hand was dealt during a round of PLO. Hachem limped on the button with AHeart SuitKSpade Suit10Spade Suit7Club Suit. Luo raised to 1,800,000 from the big blind with JSpade Suit10Heart Suit9Club Suit8Heart Suit and Hachem made it 5,600,000 to go. Luo called and the flop came down 9Spade Suit9Heart Suit7Spade Suit. Luo moved all-in with his trip nines and wrap straight draw. Hacken called with his flush draw and two pair. The 5Heart Suit turn and 4Diamond Suit river sent the pot and the title to Luo. Hachem earned a career-high score of $180,541 as the runner-up.
