“It’s with crushing sadness that we’re letting friends of Matt’s and our family know that Matt passed away on Saturday, June 15,” his family noted on Facebook. “As many of you are aware, he had two true passions – chess and poker. Happily, he was in Las Vegas attending the WSOP doing what he loved when he died.”

Parry accumulated $2.3 million in lifetime tournament winnings, highlighted by winning a $3,000 pot-limit Omaha event at the WSOP last year for $480,122. He also made the final table of the WPT Borgata Poker Open in 2017. In early June he also picked up a win in a $2,200 PLO event at the Wynn for $106,645.

From Fairport, New York, Parry excelled at both of his chosen games. He became a winner at the National Scholastic Chess Championship while in high school.

Several players expressed shock at the news of his death.

“So tragic,” Garrett Adelstein posted on Twitter. “Had many all-night battles with Matt at the tables. Couldn’t have been a nicer guy in all our interactions.”
