Matthew Alsante had just $8,346 in total live tournament earnings to his name when he took a seat in the 2024 World Series of Poker $5,000 no-limit hold’em eight max event. The Illinois resident managed to top a sizable field of 1,042 entries to walk away with his first bracelet and the $785,486 top prize.

This win also saw Alsante take home 1920 Card Player Player of the Year points. This was his first qualified score, but it alone was enough to move him within striking distance of the top 100 in the 2024 POY standings presented by Global Poker.

The top 157 finishers made the money in this event, with $4,793,200 in overall prize money up for grabs. The second and final day of play in this event began with 88 still in contention. Plenty of big names ran deep, including five-time bracelet winner Yuri Dzivielevski (38th), bracelet winner Alex Foxen (23rd), bracelet winner Giuseppe Pantaleo (19th), two-time bracelet winner Artur Martirosian (18th), a pair of bracelet winner and PokerStars Caribbean Adventure champions in Harrison Gimbel (16th) and Galen Hall (11th), and bracelet winner Patrick Leonard (8th).

Alsante won a big flip with A-K against pocket tens during four-handed play. He then busted Philip Wiszowaty (3rd – $372,446) to set up a heads-up clash with high-stakes tournament regular Punnat Punsri.

Punsri edged into the lead and nearly won the event. He got all-in with top pair of aces leading Alsante’s middle pair of fives, but the turn gave Alsante sevens and fives. A blank on the river saw Punsri left on fumes. He managed one double up, but was soon all-in with JClub Suit10Spade Suit facing the 7Spade Suit7Heart Suit of Alsante. The flip came down 8Spade Suit8Club Suit7Club Suit and Alsante flopped a full house to all but end it. The 9Spade Suit turn and 3Spade Suit meant that Punsri was eliminated as the runner-up ($523,648). The Thai poker pro now has nearly $16.5 million in lifetime earnings after this latest strong showing.

This was the 12th final-table finish of the year for Punsri, with two titles won along the way. His 5,757 POY points are good for third place in the 2024 rankings.

Here is a look at the payouts and POY points awarded at the final table:
