The Global Poker Table Talk certainly lived up to the name last week at the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas. The action featured Formula 1 drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. battling at the tables and discussing life on and off the track.
The unique format saw Leclerc teamed up with Antonio Esfandiari and 23-time Olympic swimming gold medalist Michael Phelps paired with Sainz. The event was held for the second year after the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which saw Spain’s Sainz finish third and Monaco’s Leclerc take fourth.
The two players are poker newbies and Phelps and Esfandiari served as coaches during the event. Ali Nejad served as host and interviewer as the event played out. Just a half hour into the action, a major cooler developed that ended the match quickly.
“We’re doing a great job,” Phelps said as Sainz was dealt A 7 on the dealer button. “We have them right where we want them.”
Sainz simply called and Leclerc checked with K 9. Sainz was a 60% favorite to win the hand at that point with Leclerc at just 39%. That changed considerably with a flop of Q 8 4, moving Sainz to 80% with the nut flush draw. However, Leclerc has a draw for the second-best flush possible and led out with a 15,000 bet. Sainz simply called.
The turn brought the 6, giving Sainz the nut flush and Leclerc a king-high flush. Leclerc bet 20,000 and Sainz once again simply called. The river brought a J, and Leclerc put out a bet of 70,000.
After some discussion with Phelps, Sainz moved the last of his 190,000 chips in. That received an instant call and ended the match. Sainz received a celebratory hug from Phelps.
“I didn’t think you guys had the nuts, I’ll be honest,” Esfandiari said.
Sainz and Phelps were then awarded GOAT series trophies for the win. Watch the complete hand below.
Sainz once again came out a spot ahead of his opponent in Las Vegas. Leclerc and Sainz are both members of the Ferrari F1 team. Sainz, 30, has four wins on the track in jos F1 career.
Leclerc, 27, may have lost on the poker felt, but leads on the racetrack. He has eight wins, including victories this year in Monaco, Italy, and Mexico City.
