The calendar page just flipped to December, and players in contention for the Card Player Player of the Year (POY) race have only one month left to accumulate points. The competition is in its final stretch and, with a few big events left awarding elusive POY points, there is still time to steal David Pham's No. 1 spot.
The Bellagio Five-Diamond World Poker Classic is under way with every event qualifying for POY points. Tom Schneider has already capitalized on this as he recently finished fourth in a event three, a $2,500 buy-in tournament. He added 450 points to his score. The main event of the series is the World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson Classic Championship on Dec. 12. Current POY runner-up Jonathan Little has an incredible WPT track record for this year with three televised final-table finishes, including a title win at the Mirage Poker Showdown. Another player in the POY top 10 who has similar WPT results is J.C. Tran. Currently in sixth place, Tran has also made three championship final tables with a win at the World Poker Challenge in Reno. The Five-Diamond will be last opportunity at a fourth WPT final table this year for these two players.
Another title up for grabs this month that will award POY points is the World Series of Poker Circuit event at Harrah's Atlantic City. The prelims begin Dec. 8 and lead up to the $5,150 buy-in no-limit championship on Dec. 16. All events are giving away POY points.
In Reno, Nevada, the Winter Pot of Gold tournament series is taking place at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino beginning on Dec. 7. It starts with a $330 buy-in no-limit hold'em tournament which is one of the seven events scheduled to award POY points, including the $540 buy-in championship on Dec. 16.
Players looking for more POY points can also take a trip overseas to the European Poker Tour stop in Prague. The main event is a $6,900 buy-in no-limit hold'em tournament on Dec. 10 at the Hilton Hotel.
