Three Southern African charities will benefit to the tune of around €14,000 (R150,000) next month when around a dozen celebrities will take to the felt to play in the All Africa Poker Celebrity Charity Challenge.
The event, taking place at Piggs Peak, Swaziland, will feature Darren Scott, Lee-Ann Liebenberg, Kurt Darren, Minki Van der Westhuizen, Conrad Koch, Colin Moss, Ed Jordan, Elana Afrika, and Neil Andrews.
Singer Danny K will return to defend his title after last year donating his winnings to The Compassionate Friends support group for bereaved parents, siblings, and grandparents.
The celebrities took part in a training session in preparation for the event last Thursday, Jan. 24.
Wendy Graaf, group marketing manager of Piggs Peak, said, “With the stakes being raised in true Piggs Peak style, the 2008 tournament promises to be exciting and highly entertaining, especially with this volatile combination of comedians, singers, and beautiful women. A total prize pool of R150,000 is guaranteed for the charities of the top-three placed celebrities. The first prize is R100,000, second R30,000, with third at R20,000, so while these high-profile stars have fun at the poker table, their worthy causes will also benefit from this Challenge.”
Members of the general public in the region have an opportunity to win a seat in the event by SMS-ing the word CHARITY to 32269 and can catch all the action on The All Africa Poker Channel, DTSV 393.
