The Winnin’ O’ the Green tournament series at the Bicycle Casino in California has been one of the state’s longest-running and most popular poker events of the year, and the 2008 $2,500 buy-in no-limit hold’em championship begins this Saturday at 4:15 p.m. Players can qualify for only $270 by playing the mega-supersatellite tomorrow at 4:15 p.m.
The series dates back to1990, according the Card Player tournament database, with only four events, and the largest buy-in was $300. The next year, in 2005, Jean-Robert Bellande was the last player standing out of the 148 who started. This was just after his televised final table at the Rio Las Vegas circuit event. Following the trend of professionals winning this tournament, David Daneshgar won in 2006. He beat 198 players to win $198,000. Last year, it was amateur Tim Chauser who snagged first place out of the 186 players. He was awarded $186,000.
