The PaddyPowerPoker.com €3 million-guaranteed Irish Open 2008 has always been one of Europe’s most popular tournaments, even more so now that this year’s event had an overlay of €198,000, to which the generous sponsor added €2,000 to make a nice round €200,000.
Yesterday, day 1A saw 303 players take to the felt, while today’s day 1B saw 364 entrants, making a total of 667 players ponying up the €4,200 buy-in for the event started way back in 1981 by Irish bookmaker Terry Rogers.
The clear chip leader is Irishman Jay Renehan, returning tomorrow with a massive 82,250 in chips. Other names of note on the leader board are Canadian online superstar, and last year's third-place finisher, Sorel “Imper1um” Mizzi, who sits in eighth place with 56,225 in chips, and two places below him is the biggest name of them all, the one and only Mr. Doyle Brunson, who amassed a stack of 53,800.
He will be joined in day 2 by his son Todd Brunson, who comes back with just over his 10,000 chip starting stack, and so has a bit of work ahead of him to stay afloat. Last year's runner-up, Roland De Wolfe, sits back down tomorrow to a 15,425 stack after a tumultuous day 1A, which saw his stack yo-yo from upwards of 40,000, up and down repeatedly, until he ended with a below-average stack, although it's always silly to rule him out when he still has his seat.
As for the Irish contingent, Padraig Parkinson ended the day with 28,025 in chips, having bounced back from lows of around 5,000, and sitting just above him are Corkman Ciarán O'Leary, with 29,050, and last year's fifth-place finisher, Brian O'Keeffe, who returns with 30,075.
