It was revealed today that PaddyPowerPoker.com Irish Open Champion Neil Channing won an additional £50,000 from bookie Paddy Power by backing himself to win with £500 at 100/1 during the event.
Channing placed the bet at the start of day 2, when he was in 64th position out of 257 remaining players. This is the second time the bookie has been caught out by a winning punter on the Irish Open. In 2006, Champion Vincent Melinn collected an extra €47,000 to add to his €350,000 first prize.
“I think it is great what Paddy Power have done for the Irish Open,” said a delighted Channing. “They ran a great event, added €200,000 to the prizepool, and offered a really good book on the tournament. They went a lot further than many other bookmakers would go.”
PaddyPower.com has made Sorel Mizzi joint favourite at 125/1 after cashing back to back in Dublin, with Channing quoted at 150/1. Doyle Brunson, who went deep into day two this year, is also quoted at 150/1 to lift the Terry Rogers Memorial Trophy next Easter.
The firm will also be offering markets for the European Poker Tour Grand Final in Monte Carlo, the World Series of Poker, and the PaddyPowerPoker.com Irish Winter Festival in the near future.
