Gaming industry legal monitor Gambling Compliance today reports that the Danish government has given a clear indication of its intention to open up the gambling market in the country. According to the report, government minister Kristian Jensen has gone on national radio in Denmark to declare that the government was preparing reforms in the sector which would create some kind of licensing system.

The news will be welcomed by the European Commission, which has threatened legal action against Denmark and a host of other EU member states as a result of their protectionist stance in the face of the free movement of goods and services across borders within the Union.

Elsewhere, Holland Casio, the Dutch gaming monopolist, remains hopeful of that a new online gambling bill due this summer may ressurect hope of it launching a state-run online poker site such as win2day.at, which was recently launched in Austria.

Holland Casino, which had struck a deal with Cryptologic to provide software for its expected new site, was disappointed recently when the upper house of the Dutch legislature recently voted to veto the move despite prior lower house approval.
