Gary '22Frosty' FrostSpadeClub winner Gary “22Frosty” Frost is SpadeClub’s June 29 $5,000 weekly event winner. Frost enjoys playing on SpadeClub because he likes the idea of paying a low monthly fee and having the opportunity to win a share of $100,000* every month. He has been playing poker since he was a teenager but only started playing seriously about four years ago, when he retired. After playing or coaching sports all of his life, he likes playing poker, because it fills his competition void. Card Player recently sat down with Gray “22Frosty” Frost to discuss his recent win and why he loves SpadeClub.

Card Player: How did you hear about SpadeClub?

Gary “22Frosty” Frost: I read about SpadeClub in Card Player magazine, and because I really enjoy playing tournaments, it sounded perfect for me. I also like the idea of paying a monthly fee that allows me to play plenty of freerolls.

CP: Do you have a story behind you screen name?

GF: The number 22 is my favorite number when I played basketball as a teen and young adult, and Frosty comes from my last name, as well as it is my son's dog's name (the avatar I use).

CP: How did you get started playing poker?

GF: My interest was renewed when I watched tournament final tables on TV.

CP: Do you consider yourself a recreational, amateur, or professional poker player?

GF: I am strictly a recreational player.

CP: Do you think SpadeClub is a good learning ground for people who are looking to start playing?

GF: Yes. The reason that I find SpadeClub to be the best is because I know exactly what it will cost, and I have a great opportunity to try a variety of styles in each tournament. My opponents at the casino I play at (the River Cree Casino and Resort, just west of Edmonton, Alberta) give me a hard time for playing too tight. SpadeClub allows me to play outside my comfort zone and try new things.

CP: What’s the most money you’ve ever won in a poker tournament?

GF: The $1,500 in this tournament.

CP: When do you plan on cashing out your winnings, and do you have any plans for the money you just won?

GF: I cashed out right away so that I can play in a few Canadian Poker Tour events coming up at the end of August and in early September at the River Cree Casino and Resort.

CP: Was there a particularly key hand that you played in the tournament that helped lead you to victory?

GF: Yes. An 8 suited was golden for me during the tournament. I caught some big hands with it a couple of times, sucked out with it once, and my pocket jacks held up against it on the final hand to give me the tournament win.

CP: What do you think of the format for the tournaments on SpadeClub?

GF: There is a good variety of tournaments. Small ones that go quickly and allow you to point-build and big ones that allow you the opportunity to win some cash, which validates your success.

CP: What event do you look forward to most?

GF: The weekend $5K and the monthly $40K.

CP: How do you plan to keep your points up on SpadeClub?

GF: I enjoy playing the point-builders and seeing how well I can do in the token-tournament final tables, as well.

CP: Does your playing-style differ when playing a points tournament versus a cash tournament on SpadeClub?

GF: Definitely. I enjoy the opportunity to try different styles during a tournament, as well as for each tournament. I definitely play more aggressively on SpadeClub than I do when playing live. Knowing that a lot of my opponents on SpadeClub play a little loose sometimes, I really enjoy trapping them.

CP: What advice can you give to other SpadeClub members looking to go deep in these tournaments?

GF: Vary your play. If you are getting predictable, other players will pick up on it. It is the only way someone can get a read on you on the Internet.

CP: Have you participated in any of the community features on SpadeClub? What do you think?

GF: I enjoy making friends and commenting back and forth. Most of the players are friendly and positive. You don't get too many "attitudes" like on most other sites.

CP: Have you met anyone interesting at the tables that you’ve chatted with a lot during the games?

GF: Yeah, 13jim13, NOGO67, and Donkeyfish have been very supportive from the very beginning.

CP: Do you have any general advice to share with our readers about succeeding at SpadeClub?

GF: Be patient but aggressive.

CP: What do you think sets great players apart from merely good players?

GF: They seem to know when to make moves.

CP: Tell me a little about yourself.

GF: I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my two grandchildren.
