Three events wrapped up last night in the 2008 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP). The two-day $1,000 no-limit hold’em event that kicked off Sunday night came to a close and crowned a winner, and two $500 buy-in, $200,000-guaranteed eight-or-better events — one seven-card stud and one mixed Omaha — ran start to finish. Read the event recaps below to find out who the winners were, and check out the entire WCOOP schedule and results list on CardPlayer.com.
WCOOP Event No. 20: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em (Two-Day)
The two-day $1,000 no-limit hold’em event resumed today with its final 43 players. Those players had survived a field of 3,467 to make it as far as they had, and they were guaranteed at least $6,200 for their efforts from the prize pool of $3,467,000. Two members of Team PokerStars made it very deep in the event: Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (coming off of his runner-up finish in the $25,000 heads-up no-limit hold’em event, pictured at left) and Humberto “Humberto B.” Brenes (pictured below). They both made the final two tables, finishing in 14th and 16th, respectively. Also among those at the final two tables was Internet pro Taylor “ElMastermind” McFarland, who finished in 18th.
The final six players were all guaranteed six-figure paydays, and when it got down to the final five, play was paused for dealmaking. The five finalists agreed upon a by-the-chips chop with $60,000 remaining on the line for the eventual winner. Here were the final five and their guaranteed payouts:
Mary 717 — $288,155
CamoJr — $230,388
Mark “QuasiFiction” Hirleman — $340,000
Christian “C.K.” Kruel — $226,965
NYC P.I.M.P — $197,953
It eventually came down to an unlikely heads-up match with the previous top dog versus the previous underdog. Mark “QuasiFiction” Hirleman, the chip leader at the time of the deal, went up against NYC P.I.M.P, who was on the short stack when the deal was made. NYC P.I.M.P pulled his final-five upset by pulling into the chip lead and taking down his final foe, snagging the extra $60,000 to put his total winnings at almost $258,000. He also collected the gold WCOOP bracelet for his win. NYC P.I.M.P actually received the third-highest payday of the event, as QuasiFiction’s $340,000 payday and Mary 717’s $288,000 take both overshadowed his winnings. (Mary 717 also had the added accomplishment of having taken down a previous event in this year’s WCOOP.)
The final results were:
* Payout reflects a five-way by-the-chips deal made at the final table with $60,000 left for the eventual winner.
WCOOP Event No. 21: $500 Seven-Card Stud Eight-or-Better
The first of the two events to kick off today was the seven-card stud eight-or-better tournament. The event had a $500 buy-in and a $200,000 guarantee, and it surpassed that guarantee when 525 entrants bought in, making a prize pool of $262,500. That prize pool left up to $47,775 for the eventual winner. Among those to make it to the final two tables but bust before the final were Scott “emptyseat88” Fischman (14th, pictured left) and Team PokerStars member Chad “ChadBrownPRO” Brown (16th).
When it got to the final table, James “Andy McLEOD” Obst (pictured below), a notable Internet poker pro who had already won a WCOOP bracelet this year, was still in the running for a second bracelet. That run ended when he busted in seventh place ($6,563). Once play got to heads up between weaktight and aldenpogi, the two decided to accept a by-the-chips chop deal that guaranteed weaktight $38,736 and aldenpogi $34,439. There was still $4,000 on the line for the eventual winner, per the PokerStars chopping rules. In the end, weaktight defeated his final opponent with a full house versus a flush. He earned the WCOOP bracelet and the extra $4,000 to put his total winnings at $42,736.
The final results were:
* Payout reflects a two-way by-the-chips chop at the final table with $4,000 left for the winner.
WCOOP Event No. 22: $500 Six-Handed Mixed Omaha Eight-or-Better
The final event of the night was a $500 buy-in, $200,000-guaranteed six-handed mixed Omaha eight-or-better event. The “mixed” designation meant that each level alternated between limit and pot-limit betting styles. Six hundred and twenty entrants were up to the task, generating a prize pool of $310,000. The winner of the event would leave with some new jewelry and up to $55,800 if no deal were made at the final table. A few of the notable players to come close but fall just short were Scott “BigRiskky” Clements (pictured right), who finished in 10th place ($4,030) and Team PokerStars member Victor Ramdin (pictured below), who busted in 14th ($2,790).
After 618 other players had been sent railward, just BUCKIZ6 and jamie2000 remained, and a deal had not yet been made. And a deal wouldn’t be made, as the two went on fighting it out for the entire first-place prize. Nearly $14,000 was on the line for this final elimination. BUCKIZ6 earned that extra moolah when he pushed all in on a board of K 8 5 9, and jamie2000 check-called all in, showing A J 5 2 for a pair of fives and the nut-low draw. BUCKIZ6 tabled K K 3 2 for a set of kings. The river brought another 8, and BUCKIZ6 made a full house and avoided jamie2000’s low draw to scoop the pot and eliminate his final opponent. He earned $55,800 and a WCOOP bracelet for his victory.
The final results were:
