A report commissioned by the Gaming and Leisure Association of Ireland, published earlier this week, predicts that the regulation of casinos and online gaming could generate up to 13,000 jobs and generate as much as €280 million in tax receipts by 2020.
DKM Economic Consultants, who undertook the study, say the casino sector could contribute up to €50 million each year in tax revenue.
Online gaming would be the most profitable sector for the economy, earning tax revenue of up to €230 million each year while employing up to 10,000 people in IT, financial services, and support services.
David Hickson of the Gaming & Leisure Association of Ireland said, “There has been no previous quantitative examination of the size of the casino gaming sector in Ireland nor the potential for future growth, based on international trends. This report establishes some level of an economic benchmark for the debate on regulation….While the Government’s own report clearly indicates the need for regulation of the sector in order to tighten current legislation and ensure consumer protection, DKM’s report indicates there are also sound economic arguments to be considered.”
The Gaming and Leisure Association of Ireland is calling for the sector to be regulated to secure existing jobs and benefit the ailing economy by generating much needed tax revenue.
