The 2008 World Poker Finals begins today at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut. The tournament series will feature 15 preliminary events that will lead up to the $10,000 World Poker Tour no-limit hold’em championship on Nov. 5. The tournament series will conclude on Nov. 11 at the conclusion of the WPT final table in the championship event. Last year the World Poker Finals also featured 15 preliminary events with a WPT championship event to finish things off. The well-known players who took down preliminary event titles last year included Kevin Song, (event No. 9 -- $500 limit hold’em), Nam Le (event No. 11 -- $1,000 no-limit hold’em), David Fox (event No. 12 -- $1,500 no-limit hold’em), Bernard Lee (event No. 13 -- $2,000 no-limit hold’em), and Paul Lieu (event No. 15 -- $5,000 no-limit hold’em). The WPT $10,000 no-limit hold’em championship event attracted 575 players, with amateur Mike Vela taking down the $1,704,986 first-place prize.
Card Player Player of the Year points will be up for grabs in every open buy-in preliminary event. The games that will be spread in preliminary events include no-limit hold’em, limit hold’em, seven-card stud, Omaha eight-or-better, and seven-card stud eight-or-better. The preliminary events will also feature seniors and ladies no-limit hold’em events.
