Day 2 at the €1,500 + €150 buy in PaddyPowerPoker.com Irish Winter Festival main event saw the field reduced from 142 to just 22 with such well known faces as Andy Black, Neil Channing, Scott Gray, and Ciaran O’Leary biting the dust.
At the last level Black went from a very comfortable position to out in a couple of hands. The hand that did the damage involved Fiachra Meere. Black raised from the small blind and Meere called. The flop came: 932. Black led out and was raised all-in by Meere. “Go on,” said Balck as he made the call with Q-2.
Meere showed A-A. The turn was a 5 and the river a 7 which crippled Black. William Martin cleaned up what was left of Black’s chips.
Former Irish Open finalist Nicky Power had the poker gods on his side for most of the day. Approaching the bubble he pushed from under the gun and it passed around to the small blind, David Poole. He asks for a countdown and seemed to be faced with a difficult decision. He eventually called and the big blind duly passed. Poole showed A-A and Power had 9-9. The poker gods seem to hate slowrollers and waited right until the river for the Power to hit his set - the second time he'd out drawn Poole.
