WPT: Day 3 of the Foxwoods World Poker FinalsIvey, Matusow, Smith Still In Contention |
|
Many expected the inevitable wall, for the tournament to come to a crashing halt, but it never came. The returning 91 players quickly separated the pretenders from the contenders and within three levels the money bubble had bursted.
Along the way, more than a few notables were unable to cash including Toto Leonidas, Ryan Young, Michael Binger, Chris Bell, Victor Ramdin and Anna Wroblewski. Leonidas busted just before the bubble and because of a simultaneous elimination one table over, hand-for-hand play was never necessary.
Due to an interesting payout structure, each player eliminated from 50 to 28 would receive the same prize of $21,320. As a result, the play continued its rapid pace and by the end of the night the field had been trimmed to 33.
Coming into the day with the chip lead, Jonathan Jaffe stumbled a bit but inevitably regained his composure and was the first player to cross the 1 million in chips mark. He ended the day as the overall chip leader with 1,100,000.
Mike Matusow spent most of the day in the middle of the pack, but late in the evening he doubled up with a set of tens against Arthur Azen's pocket aces. His rush of cards got so frustrating for his opponent, that Azen had a loud outburst of expletives to end the night in Matusow direction. A stunned room awkwardly awaited the end of the day as Matusow happily raked in pot after pot. He finished the day as the only other millionaire with 1,076,500.
Among the notables to bust in the money included Rodney Legendre (48th), Christian Harder (44th), Chris Ferguson (43rd), Svetlana Gromenkova (41st), Steven Levy (40th), Vadim Trincher (38th), and Daniel Negreanu (35th).
The players will return at noon on Saturday and play five levels or down to the final nine, whichever comes first.
Here are the top ten stacks along with some notables:
Jon Friedberg (449,000), Alex Bolotin (435,500), Gavin Smith (375,000), Phil Ivey (225,500), Will Failla (215,000), Bill Gazes (214,500), David Pham (192,000), Adam Lippert (168,500), Jeff King (161,500), Freddy Deeb (154,500), Kevin Saul (93,000), Danny Shiff (51,000)
