Marty Smyth is the Ladbrokes Poker Million VII champion winning $1 million after making the most dramatic of comebacks in London last night. Smyth, who also made the final table of the prestigious televised event in 2006 and 2007, went one better this year despite losing almost all his chips early in the tournament and being 100/1 against winning.
With A-K Smyth re-raised fellow countryman Liam Flood only to face an all-in which he called. Flood had K-K and won the pot leaving Smyth with just 15,000. Several double ups later and Smyth was right back in the game and saw off challenges from Norwegian Svein Petter Neilsen and Englishman Kevin Allen to ensure the Irish took the top four spots and over $1.5 million in prize money.
“I can’t quite believe it still,” said Boylepoker pro Smyth. “I thought I was gone when I lost most of my chips early in the tournament. To come back and win $1 million is probably the highlight of my career. It just shows it’s never over until it’s over.”
Roy Brindley, a Ladbrokes sponsored pro who missed out on the final by just one place and commentated on the event which was broadcast live on SKY Sports 3, said, “What an incredible night for Irish poker. To come from behind is what true champions are made of and in Marty Smyth we have one of the greatest poker players of recent times. For Ireland to sweep the top four places just shows how strong Irish poker is in international terms.”
First $1,000,000 (Marty Smyth)
Second $260,000 (Eoghan O’Dea )
Third $175,000 (Ciaran O’Leary)
Fourth $130,000 (Liam Flood)
Fifth $100,000 (Kevin Allen)
Sixth $75,000 (Svein Petter Neilsen)
Smyth is also the current pot-limit Omaha world champion and World Open champion and now has career winnings of over $3.6 million.
