Poker Face PerformanceDay 1A of the Aussie Millions $10,500 AUD no-limit hold’em main event began at the Crown Casino at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18. Many of the top professional poker players in the world flocked to Melbourne, Australia, for the main event and a shot at winning the $2 million AUD dollars guaranteed that awaits the winner. Things got kicked off with a lavish series of introduction festivities, highlighted by a pop performance of the song “Poker Face” that included everything but indoor pyrotechnics. 2008 Aussie Millions champion Alexander Kostritsyn made some remarks, and then Joe Hachem welcomed the crowd and announced shuffle up and deal to start the tournament.

Patrik AntoniusThat was when 191 players began their march through six, 90-minute levels of poker, except for one player who showed up almost two hours late. Patrik Antonius busted out of the $100,000 AUD no-limit hold’em challenge late last night in ninth place, and he arrived an entire level of play late today as a result. Antonius recovered from this late start quite nicely, and he ended the night in second place on the leader board with 139,750. Aussie Christopher Chronis was seated at the same table as Antonius all day long, and while Antonius was busy making his comeback, Chronis was busy most of the time as the chip leader. That is where he ended the night, with 173,375 to pace the field. Table 31 garnered most of the attention during day 1A. The mix of the featured table stage, star power of Antonius, and the huge chip stack of Chronis proved to be an irresistible draw for many railbirds.

Top pros who remain in the hunt among the 74 players who survived include Noah Schwartz, James Obst, Sorel Mizzi, Raymond Rahme, Tony G, Barny Boatman, David Saab, and Mark Vos. Lost along the way during day 1A were John Hennigan, Alec Torelli, James Potter, Julian Powell, and Peter Wong.

Here is the day 1A leader board:

Christopher Chronis: 175,375
Patrik Antonius: 139,750
Noah Schwartz: 138,275
Derek Cheung: 132,800

Warwick Mirzikinian: 103,575
Sorel Mizzi: 95,575

Danny Andrews: 89,000
