Aussie Millions -- Main Event Day 2

Less Than a Third of the Field Survives

Crown Casino Entertainment ComplexThe advent of two-hour levels in a poker tournament usually slows things down. This is considered a lavish accommodation in the tournament structure to maximize the amount of play a poker player gets for their money. Day 2 at the 2009 Aussie Millions Poker Championship $10,500 AUD no-limit hold’em main event employed two-hour levels at the bequest of the Crown Casino tournament staff. The length of levels had little effect on the speed of play, though, as less than a third of the starting field of 320 players remained when play ended after 12:30 a.m.

Players couldn’t bust out of the tournament fast enough, and the money bubble now looms as the dominant event on the early schedule for the tournament tomorrow. With 86 players still in the hunt, the final 64 players will walk away with prize money here in Melbourne, Australia.

Lost along the way during the chaos today were the following notable players: Ivan Demidov, James Obst, Mel Judah, Jeremy Joseph, Casey Kastle, Michael and Nick Binger, Marty Smyth, Jeff Madsen, Neil Channing, Jim Worth, pop star Brian McFadden, Tony G, Phil Laak, Mark Vos, Maya-Gellar Antonius, and David Saab.

Joe Hachem still remains in the hunt with 45,000, and the Melbournian hopes to take home the Aussie Millions title for the home country. He had a significant railbird presence throughout the day, despite his table sitting as an island unto itself in the middle of the room. Another player who created quite a buzz on the rail today was Patrik Antonius. He finished the day with 335,900, good for seventh on the leader board.

Annette ObrestadAt the end of the night it was two dominant ladies that found their chip stacks on top of the competition. Annette Obrestad and Annica Ivert dominated play after dinner, and they head into tomorrow in first and second chip position. Here is the day-2 leader board:

Annnic Ivert: 555,900
Annette Obrestad: 454,800
Rajkumar Ramakrishnan: 388,200
David Dochtery: 362,000
Stewart Scott: 348,000
Karl Bullock: 347,900
Patrik Antonius: 335,900
Michael Tureniec: 332,000
John Paul Kelly: 321,600
Will Zemljaric: 308,000

Other pros looking to make the money include: Barny Boatman, Scotty Nguyen, Michael Mcdonald, Tommy Le, Joe Cassidy, Eric Stiglets, Raymond Rahme, Grant Levy, Matt Vengrin, Steve Sung, Sorel Mizzi, and Clonie Gowen.

Check back in tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. AEDT (5:30 p.m. PST) to catch all of the action in live updates, chip counts, and photos, as it is determined who’s going to get paid  in the Land Down Under.
