In Part 2 of his two-part interview on Card Player TV's The Scoop (sponsored by Full Tilt), 1983 World Champ Tom McEvoy shares the circumstances surrounding his main-event win and a host of other topics with the show’s hosts, Adam Schoenfeld and Diego Cordovez.
McEvoy explains how poker Hall of Famer Johnny Chan was the big winner of the 1983 main event, acknowledging that Chan probably won more than he or the runner-up did since the last two competitors had so much of their action staked.
Chan approached McEvoy when he was in second place of three final players in a satellite into the main event. Chan offered McEvoy $1,000 for 20 percent of his action in the $10,000-to-enter main event. McEvoy was coming off a WSOP win in limit hold’em, but he still couldn’t justify paying 10 grand of his own money to enter the tourney, hence the satellite.
McEvoy accepted the deal, went on to win the satellite and then the main event itself, paying off Chan big-time. McEvoy was the first person to win the World Series as a satellite qualifier.
The ’83 champ also discusses how he was perceived both at that final table and by his friends back home in Michigan when he picked up his life and family and moved to Las Vegas to pursue poker full-time.
