Heather “widowmaker” Everett of Charleston, South Carolina, grew up watching her father play professional poker. Everett proved that her poker skills rival her dad’s when she took down SpadeClub’s $5,000 weekly event. Although Everett doesn’t spend as much time as she would like to
devoted to poker, she has dreams of following in her father’s footsteps as soon as her 3-year-old son is old enough to start school.
Card Player sat down with Everett to discuss her win and how she’s seen the poker community change throughout the years.
Card Player: First off, can you tell me a little bit about your life outside of poker?
Heather “widowmaker” Everett: I used to be a high school science teacher, but now I stay at home with my 3-year-old boy, Quinn. I would really love to be a professional poker player.
CP: How long have you been playing poker, and how did you get started playing poker on SpadeClub?
HE: I learned to play poker sitting on my dad’s lap as a little girl watching the games we had at our house weekly. I’ve been playing poker in home games in South Carolina since 2003, but if you know anything about the laws here, you know we had to stop home games for fear of going to jail. My dad got me a subscription to Card Player about two years ago. As soon as the ads started for SpadeClub, I got interested. I love it.
CP: Do you have a story behind you screen name?
HE: Big Daddy, my dad gave it to me because I “create widows” at the table.
CP: Is there a professional poker player you look up to most? If so, why?
HE: Jennifer Harman; I like watching women who play and keep up with the boys. I think Phil Ivey is amazing!
CP: What is the best thing you did to get your game to where it is today?
HE: Play, play, play. It’s the only way to learn to trust your instincts.
CP: What is the one thing that you wish you knew about poker when you had first started playing?
HE: That the most important part is money management, not what your cards are.
CP: Was there a particularly key hand that you played in the tournament that helped lead you to victory?
HE: I lost about half of my stack and was down to approx 200,000. Then I got J-J and tried to play it aggressively. Other guy had 7-7 and played more aggressively. I almost laid it down, but I thought, “Now or never.”
CP: What is your next goal on SpadeClub? How do you plan to accomplish it?
HE: My next goal is to get a monthly badge by playing all that I can.
CP: Do you have any general advice to share with our readers about succeeding on SpadeClub?
HE: Be nice; everyone needs time to learn.
CP: What is your favorite part of the SpadeClub community?
HE: I love the profile pages that allow everyone to get to know each other. My dad can’t believe how big the poker community has become. It’s great to be able to hear the stories people have to tell.
CP: Is there anything else you would like to add?
HE: Thank you SpadeClub for giving me the opportunity to practice and learn the game I love!
