Kevin 'fishguide05' McCoyKevin “fishguide05” McCoy of Texas is SpadeClub’s latest $5,000 weekly event winner. Better known to his friends as the “reel” McCoy, Kevin’s fishing guide service is already taking requests from SpadeClub members who are looking for a day on the water and, perhaps, a few poker tips.

Card Player had the chance, off the water, of course, to ask McCoy about his recent win on SpadeClub.com, where he’s only been an Exclusive member for less than two weeks.

Card Player: First off, can you tell me a little bit about your life outside of poker?

Kevin “fishguide05” McCoy: I am 54 years young and am a fulltime saltwater fishing guide in South Texas. Obviously, I love the water, and I am fortunate to spend many days enjoying the fun and beauty.

CP: How long have you been playing poker?

KM: I have been playing poker off and on for my entire life. I have been playing hold’em for about the last four years.

CP: What was your first experience with poker like?

KM: The first time I went to Vegas to play poker, I won an afternoon tournament at Harrah’s. The very next day, I played in a tournament at Binion’s and won that one, as well. You think I had a big head?

CP:
Well, it looks like beginner’s luck follows you wherever you go. You’ve only been a SpadeClub member for two weeks, and you’ve won one of the biggest events.

KM: I am so new to the site that I am still learning what the different icons under the players’ names mean.

CP: What is the one thing that you wish you knew about poker when you had first started playing?

KM: I wish that I had completely understood the patience aspect of the game.

CP: How did you get started playing poker on SpadeClub?

KM: I saw an advertisement on television and checked the site out. I thought that it looked interesting and was unique, so I joined. I have only been a member since Jan. 28, 2009.

CP: What is the story behind your screen name?

KM: Fishguide05, I am a fishing guide and started playing online in ’05.

CP: You won SpadeClub’s largest $5,000 weekly event so far, with 1,832 entrants; how did you do it?

KM: I had patience, was aggressive at times, and was very, very lucky. I was low on chips and hit a four- to five-hand rush wherein I was all in. I won all of the hands. I think the other players thought that I was on tilt. I also was catching some good cards. I was having a good time, chatting with different players, and keeping it light.

CP: What is the best thing you did to get your game to where it is today?

KM: I just keep playing a lot of tournaments of all kinds, multi-table tournaments and sit-and-gos. The more you play, obviously, the more experience you gain.

CP: What mistakes do you see players making most often in poker tournaments?

KM: They get frustrated and impatient, and I see A-K overplayed way too much.

CP: What is your method to go about piecing together what kinds of hands your opponents could be holding?

KM: Past play, betting, and even sometimes the chat.

CP:  What is your next goal on SpadeClub?

KM: To win another weekly, then, of course, the monthly.

CP: How do you plan to accomplish that goal?

KM: Keep playing.
