Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier from France yesterday defeated John Juanda to make it into the final eight of the NBC National Heads Up Championship in Las Vegas, guaranteeing himself a $75,000 payday. Sixty-four players entered the $25,000 buy in event and Elky will be joined by, among others, Phill Hellmuth (who ElkY will meet in the next round), Daniel Negreanu, and Vanessa Russo vying for the $500,000 first prize.
Grospellier and Juanda had quite the back-and-forth match. Early in the match, Grospellier held the lead and got Juanda all in holding Q-J against his A-7. Juanda turned a jack and took the lead.
Later in the match, both players got it in on a flop of AQ9. Juanda held AX4 for top pair, and Grospellier needed held with J-10 for a open-ended straight draw. The turn was the 2, killing two of Grospellier's eight outs, but the river was an offsuit King, giving the pot to ElkY and the lead.
On the last hand, Juanda was forced to shove with J-6 only to get called by ElkY's K-Q. The board helped neither player and Juanda was eliminated, earning $25,000. Grospellier will now face off against Phil Hellmuth in the Elite Eight.
ElkY is currently Card Player European Player of the Year and earlier this year won the High Rollers event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. Check CardPlayer.com for a full report on day 2 at the NBC National Heads Up Championship.
