The record 667 entrants at the PokerStars.com EPT German Open have created a total prize pool of €3,335,000. The remaining 251 players on day 2 were vying for the €917,000 top prize and would play through the bubble and well into the money before the day was done.
Early bustouts were EPT Barcelona champion Sebastian Ruthenberg (pictured left) and one of yesterday's trailblazers and World Series of Poker bracelet winner Davidi Kitai, from Belgium.
Ruthenberg pushed all in with A-8 from the cutoff and was called by the small blind, who held pocket jacks. Things looked rosey for him as the board dropped A A 2, but the turn brought devastation in the form of the J, with an equally unhelpful 3 on the river.
Kitai raised from the small blind with 6 4 and got one caller. The flop was K-5-2 with one spade. Kitai checked his inside-straight draw, and his opponent bet 2,500. Kitai came over the top with a raise to 5,000, which was met with a call.
The turn was the J, giving him a flush draw, so he pushed all in. His opponent called, and the river was a blank. He was beaten by K-7 for top pair.
Other early fallers on day 2 in Dortmund were Jonas Klausen and Johannes Strassmann who called an all in with 10-10 to be met with A-K, which hit a flop of A-Q-J, with a river 10 giving his opponent a straight.
Also out of action well before the bubble were Benjamin Zamani, Marius Targowski, Thomas Stellmacher, Alex Kravchenko, Julian Thew, Markus Lehman, Markus Golser, Sebastien Decamps, Soren Kongsgaard, and Ivo Donev.
Dutchman Daan Ruiter was flying by mid-session and moved into the chip-leader spot with 175,000.
However, he came a cropper after holding the lead for only a short time. Ruiter raised on the small blind, Martin Hansen reraised, Ruiter pushed all in, and Hansen called.
Ruiter showed A K and Hansen revealed A-J. The first card brought a gift for Ruiter, but that gift just wasn't good enough: K-10-6-Q-X, and the Dutchman who had been doing so well among chip leaders was astoundingly put out of the tournament.
Last year’s winner, Mike McDonald (pictured right), was up and down and up throughout the day. One pot that helped saw Vincent Wagner show pocket sevens for a flopped set but McDonald had also a flopped set ... of eights. Wagner was out, and McDonald was up to 125,500 in chips.
Moving toward the bubble and Max Pescatori raised to 6,500 from the small blind and Umberto Vitagliano on the big blind called.
The flop came K 5 4, and Pescatori bet 4,500. Italian Vitagliano pushed all in, and Pescatori called with A A, while Vitagliano showed A 5.
The turn kept Pescatori safe with the K, but the river brought 10, and it was all over for the Italian pirate.
At the bubble, a short-stacked Toby Newton got it all in with pocket sixes against Italian Claudio Cecchi's A 4.
The board fell A-10-2-J, and with one more card to determine Newton's tournament life, he had just two outs. The river came an 8, and it was all over. Now 64 players could relax, having made the money.
At the end of play for the evening, 34 players remained, and the top 10 in chips were:
