Malta Against European Parliament Gambling ResolutionMalta Stands Ground in Online Gambling Regulation Debate |

Malta has taken a stand at the European parliament against the motion for a single European market for online gambling.
Such a topic is extremely important to Malta as over the years it has attracted numerous online gambling and poker sites, largely because of its tax regime.
The non-binding resolution being voted upon in Parliament was that member states would retain their own control over online gambling, such as poker, in order to protect consumers, and moderate exposure to it.
Two Maltese members of the European Parliament (MEPs), Simon Busuttil and Louis Grech joined 66 others who were abstaining from voting on this non-binding resolution. Thirty-six MEPs voted against the idea, but 544 voted in favour.
An alternative motion was put forward but that also faced adversity with 570 voting against it. This alternative argued that gambling is an economic activity which has its own internal market rules based on the freedom to provide services.
The final resolution saw a middle ground stating that such regulation was culture-specific, therefore, member states have the right to regulate their own gambling structures.
