Online Poker -- Shaun Deeb Takes the Lead in OPOY StandingsRoxmorE and LudvigA Win Big on Sunday |
|
Last week, Shaun Deeb vaulted up the Card Player Online Player of the Year leader board with an unheard of week, winning three separate tournaments and cashing in five OPOY-qualifying events for nearly six figures. On Sunday, Deeb (pictured at left) continued to roll, taking down the $100 rebuy on PokerStars for $75,790 and then later going deep in the Sunday Million before his kings were cracked by the A-K of the eventual runner-up.
That would usually be enough for most mortals, but Deeb took it one step further, final-tabling a $10 rebuy for another $8,052 and then winning an $18,000 package for the EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final. The surge on Sunday allowed Deeb to leap two spots in the rankings, taking over the leader board at the top spot.
What makes Deeb's rise to the No. 1 position even more impressive is that he did it with the rest of the leader board nipping at his heels, having great days of their own. Steve "gboro780" Gross actually went deeper in the Sunday Million than Deeb, and at one point shared a table with 27 players remaining. Gross held the chip lead with about 18 left, but ultimately fizzled out in 12th, earning $7,651. That was on top of the $24,773 he earned by final-tabling the Sunday Brawl over at Full Tilt, which picked him up 400 points.
Other notables to score big Sunday paydays included Lee "acumen53" Childs, who won the $85,000 guarantee with rebuys on Full Tilt and Jason "Jcarver" Somerville, who won the $75,000 guarantee. Kevin "ImaLuckSac" MacPhee took down one of the $100 rebuys, and KingKobeMVP banked $91,250 for outlasting the rest of the field in the Sunday 500.
